Royal Free International About Royal Free International About Royal Free International

The Royal Free has a pioneering history. Established in 1828 by William Marsden, a newly qualified surgeon who was shocked that he could not find treatment for a penniless young woman, we were the first hospital to provide free hospital care to those who could not afford treatment and the only hospital to stay open during the 19th century cholera epidemics. For several years we were the only hospital in London to offer facilities for clinical instruction to women, beginning a long association with the London School of Medicine for Women.

Today, the Royal Free continues to provide world class care and be at the forefront of medical advances.
